Imperieuse Class (1886) CC

The two ships of the Imperieuse Class were armoured cruisers, designed to serve as flagships on foreign stations.

During construction, bunker capacity was increased to such an extent that they became badly overweight. Concern for their stability lead to them being sheathed with 10 inches of teak instead of 4 inches, This increased their beam by one foot.

Imperieuse completed with a sailing rig which aggravated her weight and stability problems. After trials the masts and rig were removed, leaving only a pole mast with military top. This helped and the same changes were made to the Warspite.

In service they took turns serving as flagship on the Pacific station.
