Description |
The British had a naval base at Cuddalore, South East India and the French had one about 20 miles south at Pondicherry. The British squadron of seven ships-of-the-line was preparing to leave the roads at Port St. David when they sighted the French squadron of nine ships-of-the-line at about 0900hrs. Both squadrons formed line-of-battle and engaged during the afternoon. The French withdrew but the British could not catch the fleeing French. During the action the British rear failed to provided sufficient support and three captains were later court-martialled.
