Date - 12-October
Type - Fleet or Squadron Actions
Conflict - French Revolutionary War; 1793-1802

Description A French force under Commodore Bompard, comprising 1 ship-of-the-line (Hoche), plus 8 frigates, carrying 3,000 troops which were intended to land in Ireland to take advantage of anti-British unrest.

A British squadron under Commodore Sir John Warren met the French during bad weather at 11am on 11-Oct, and General chase was ordered.

The French ships were overhauled the next morning one by one.

By 11am, the French Hoche had sunk and by afternoon 3 French frigates had struck and prize crews put aboard.

Three more were later captured and only 2 survived to reach France.
