Prince Consort Class (1864) BB |
|
This
class was a continuation of the policy adopted for HMS
Royal Oak where wooden hulls already under construction were
converted to ironclads.
Although similar to Royal Oak they had more powerful and heavier machinery. However this gave them no advantage in either speed or range. They had a reputation for rolling heavily and so were poor gun platforms. But they were successful ships and spent much of their time overseas.
