Bellerophon Class (1865) BB |
|
Completed
as a class of one HMS Bellerophon was the first ironclad to
have her main armament concentrated in a battery amidships, rather than in
a broadside running in a gundeck most of the length of the ship.
This arrangement reduced the area which needed to be fully protected by armour, and so saved weight. It also made the guns less affected by the pitching of the ship. As she was 80ft shorter than HMS Warrior she needed more powerful engines to attain the same speed.
