Swordfish Class (1916) SS

HMS Swordfish was a single ship class, intended as another attempt at a Fleet submarine to operate with the Grand Fleet at 21kts.

In size she lay between the diesel powered E Class (1913) of 670 tons, and the steam powered K Class (1917) of 1,980 tons.

At 18kts she did not have the surface speed to keep up with the Fleet, and her submerged speed of 10kts was even further behind what was required.  Her restricted vision and poor manoeuvrability meant operations were hazardous when in company with surface ships.

She was later converted to be a surface patrol boat, and fitted with 2 x 12pdr guns.
