HMS Searcher (1943) CVE  (3rd)

    
This the third ship to carry the name HMS Searcher was an Attacker Class, escort aircraft carrier.

Built by Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding at Seattle. Laid down 20-Feb-1942, launched 20-Jul-1942 on Lend-Lease and commissioned into the Royal Navy 07-Apr-1943.

Arrived in the UK at Liverpool 13-Jul-1943 and modifications to RN requirements took until 06-Oct-1943 when she was allocated to Western Approaches Command.

Operated in the Atlantic until Mar-1944 when she joined the Home Fleet and operated in Norwegian waters until May-1944. Returned to Atlantic duty until Jul-1944 when she moved to the Mediterranean. Operated there until Oct-1944 when she returned to the UK and refitted at the Clyde.

Served in Norwegian waters again from Mar/Jul-1945, then allocated to the East Indies Fleet.

Arrived at Trincomalee but returned to the UK at the Clyde 09-Oct-1945 for de-storing.

Returned to the US Navy 29-Nov-1945 at Norfolk Navy Yard.

Sold as the merchant vessel Captain Theo, Renamed Oriental Banker 1964, and arrived at Taiwan 21-Apr-1976 for breaking up.

Won the Battle Honours: Atlantic 1943-44, Aegean 1944, South France 1944 and Norway 1944-45.
