HMS Reaper (1944) CVE  (1st)

    
This the only ship to carry the name HMS Reaper was a  Ruler Class (1942) escort aircraft carrier. Built for the US Navy as USS Winjah, CVE 34, and transferred to the Royal Navy under lease-lend terms.

Built by Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding Corp at Seattle, laid down 05-Jun-1943, launched 22-Nov-1943, transferred to the Royal Navy and commissioned 18-Feb-1944.

Modifications to meet Royal Navy requirements followed at Vancouver, and lasted until May-1944.

Allocated to Western Approaches Command and used mainly as a ferry carrier.

Loaned to the US Navy Jan-1945 as a ferry carrier until May 1945.

Sailed to join the British Pacific Fleet 23-Jul-1945.

Returned to the UK to de-store at the Clyde 27-Mar-1946.

Returned to the US Navy 20-May-1946.

Later sold as the merchant ship South Africa Star.

Broken up at Japan May-1967.

Won the Battle Honour: Atlantic 1944.
