This the second ship to carry the name HMS Preston was originally launched as HMS Salisbury, a fourth rate, 48-gun, ship-of-the-line.

Built by Herring of Buckler's Hard, launched 18-Apr-1698, 134ft 6in long, 34ft wide and of 682 tons builders measurement (bm).

Captured by the French ship Adroit,  10-Apr-1703.

Recaptured 15-Mar-1798.

Renamed HMS Preston 02-Jan-1716.

Rebuilt 1742 as 853 tons bm.

Used as a hulk from Sep-1748 at Trincomalee.

Broken up at Trincomalee Nov-1749.
