HMS Niobe (1898) CC  (4th)

    
This the fourth ship to carry the name HMS Niobe was a 1st Class, Protected Cruiser.

Built by Vickers of Barrow, laid down 16-Dec-1895, launched 20-Feb-1897 and completed 06-Dec-1898.

On completion served with the Channel Fleet 1898-1902, with a detachment to the Cape Station 1899-1900.

Refitted at Barrow 1903-04, then went into reserve 1905-10.

Sold to Canada 1910.

Based at Halifax, Nova Scotia 1910-11, ran aground on Cape Sable 29-Jul-1911 and repairs took until late 1912. Moved to the pacific 1914. Joined the America & West Indies Station 1914-15,

Paid off Oct-1815, but used as a depot ship at Halifax 1915-20.

Badly damaged in the ammunition explosion at Halifax narrows 06-Dec-1917, but continued in service without funnels, ventilators or masts.

Sold 1922 and broken up in Philadelphia.
