HMS Naiad (1940) CC  (4th)

    
This the fourth ship to carry the name HMS Naiad was an anti-aircraft, light cruiser.

Built by Hawthorn Leslie of Hebburn, laid down 26-Aug-1937, launched 03-Feb-1939, and commissioned 24-ul-1940.

On completion joined the Home Fleet and t0ok part in ocean trade protection work.

Took part in operations against German raiders Nov-1940 after sinking of HMS Jervis Bay.

During Dec-1940 and Jan-1941 escorted convoys to Freetown, after which she returned to home waters.May-1941 was with Force H on Malta convoy operations as Flagship 15th Cruiser Squadron.

Then moved to operations  at Crete and later Syria.

The rest of her service was in the Mediterranean often supporting Malta convoys.

Torpedoed and sunk 11-Mar-1942 North of Mersa Matruh by U-565.

Won the Battle Honours: Crete 1941, Mediterranean 1941, Malta Convoys 1941-42.
