HMS Grimsby (1934) SL  (1st)

    
This the first ship to carry the name HMS Grimsby was the name ship of a class of 8 escort sloops.

Built at Devonport Dockyard, laid down 23-Jan-1933, launched 19-Jul-1933 and completed 17-May-1934.

On commissioning went to Hong Kong, arriving Nov-1934 and remaining in the Far East until returning to the UK on Oct-1939. There she joined the Rosyth Escort Force and convoy escort work on the East Coast until May-1940.

Then she went to the Red Sea until Mar-1941 when she moved to the Mediterranean and convoy escort work to and from Crete.

Attacked and sunk by Italian aircraft 40 miles north-east of Tobruk 25-May-1941.

Won the Battle Honours: Greece 1941, Crete 1941 and Libya 1941.
