HMS Explorer (1954) SS  (1st)

    
This the first ship to carry the name HMS Explorer was one of a class of two experimental submarines.

Built by Vickers Armstrong of Barrow, launched 05-Mar-1954, 178ft long, 16ft wide and displacing 780 tons.

Unarmed and streamlined for underwater speed.

Powered by Hydrogen Peroxide which was used to heat water for steam turbine propulsion.

Used as high speed targets with underwater speeds of up to 30kts.

Due to the unstable nature of its fuel system was nicknamed 'HMS Exploder'

Sold 08-Feb-1965.
