This the first ship to carry the name HMS Essex was a 60-gun, ship.

Built at Deptford, launched 1653 and of 652 tons builders measurement.

Captured by the French, Jun-1666 in the "Four Days' Battle".

Won the Battle Honours: Gabbard 1653, Scheveningen 1653 and Four Days' Battle 1666.
