This the third ship to carry the name HMS Devastation was laid down in Nov-1869 and completed in
Apr-1873.
She served in home waters from 1873-74, then went on to the Mediterranean until 1878. Following a refit and period in Reserve, she was guardship at Queensferry 1885-90. During a major refit from 1891-92 she was re-armed and had new machinery fitted. Most of 1893-98 was spent either in Reserve or as a guardship in home waters. Was guardship at Gibralter 1898-1902, after which she was paid off into Reserve.
