HMS Brighton (1940) DD  (2nd)

This the second ship to carry the name HMS Brighton was a Town Class, destroyer. One of 50 sold to the Royal Navy under the destroyers for bases agreement.

Originally the USS Cowell DD167, built by Bethlehem Steel of Fore River, laid down 15-Jul-1918, launched 23-Nov-1918, commissioned in the US Navy 17-Mar-1919, commissioned in the Royal Navy 23-Sep-1940 and renamed.

Arrived at Devonport 12-Oct-1940 to begin refit which lasted until 17-Jan-1941. Joined the 1st Minelaying Squadron and on 25-Jun-1941 was in collision with HMS Kenya.

Repairs at the Clyde lasted until 25-Sep and defects found during trials meant she did not begin working up until 26-Oct-1941. After this she rejoined the 1st Minelaying Squadron.

Refitted on the Clyde 08-Dec-1941 to 30-Mar-1942.

Used as a target ship for the Fleet Air Arm from Nov-1942. Collided with Star of the Wave 13-Jan-1944 and after survey was put into reserve on the Tyne Mar-1944 without being repaired.

Following the political decision to transfer equivalent US and UK tonnage to Russia in replacement of her Russia's previously agreed share of Italian Fleet on the defeat of Italy. (Italy now being an ally). Brighton was repaired and loaned to Russia until she could receive her share of Italian ships at the end of the war.

Loaned to the Soviet Navy 16-Jul-1942 to 28-Feb-1949 and renamed Zharki. Returned to Royal Navy at Rosyth 04-Mar-1949 and deemed worn out.

Sold 05-Apr-1949 and broken up at Bo'ness.
