This the first ship to carry the name HMS Birmingham was a
Light Cruiser. Built by Armstrong of Elswick, laid down 10-Jun-1912, launched 07-May-1913, and completed Feb-1914. On completion joined the Home Fleet, then on the outbreak of WW1 the Grand Fleet 1914-19. Sank the German U-boat U-15 09-Aug-1914, the first u-boat to be sunk in WW1. To Africa with the 6th Light Cruiser Squadron 1919-21, then returned to the UK and went into reserve 1921-22. Used for trooping duties to the Far East early 1923. Back to Africa as Flagship 6th Light Cruiser Squadron 1923-28. To the UK and into reserve 1929. Sold to Ward Feb-1931. Arrived Pembroke Dock 12-Mar-1931 for breaking up. Won the Battle Honours: Heligoland 1914, Dogger Bank 1915 and Jutland 1916.
