Bird Class (1975) PV |
|
The Bird Class of five patrol boats were designed for patrol and fishery protection duties in coastal and inshore waters. The first four were ordered in late 1972 and completed between 1975 and 1977. The fifth vessel was originally an RAF rescue boat and was transferred to the Royal Navy on 30-Oct-1984 when the RAF Marine branch was closed. They had poor seakeeping qualities and were not considered a success for their design work. As a consequence Peterel and Sandpiper were used as training tenders and never used operationally. The other three served with the Northern Ireland Squadron as a replacement for Ton Class minesweepers.
