Type 21 Amazon Class (1974) FG

The Amazons were the first Royal Navy warships designed by a private company since 1945.

The Royal Navy oversight of the design was not rigorous enough, which meant they were delivered at near their maximum top weight limit and with too little room for increased equipment or weapons. So, unable to be fitted with sonar, radar or Sea Wolf missile system, the survivors of the Falklands War were sold to the Pakistani Navy at a young age.

The six survivors of the 1982 Falklands War were fitted with metal strips welded to the sides of the ships to stop stress cracks developing.

While criticised for lack of armament and too much top weight, they were popular in service.

All were sold to Pakistan in 1994.
