Zebra Class (1900) TBD |
|
The
Zebra Class was one of 14 Classes of Torpedo Boat Destroyers. Designed to a
common contract speed of 27kts, with each class built by a different
builder. Built by Thames Iron Works of Blackwall, part of the 1893/94 construction programme. In comparison with the prototypes the bow torpedo tube was omitted. While the builders had a long and successful pedigree of building sailing ships and had built major iron warships this was it's first attempt at building a ship of this size. The original design required a large number of alterations and after launch it took an extended time to reach its contract speed and be accepted. As a result the company did not receive another destroyer order for about 10 years. On 30-Aug-1912, in common with all other 27kt and prototype classes they were redesignated the A Class.
