Eagle Class (1919) CV

HMS Eagle was completed in 1919 as a class of one.

Originally designed as a Chilean battleship the Almirante Cochrane work was suspended and the hull taken over by the Admiralty. She was completed as an aircraft carrier and incorporated many features which were designed for HMS Hermes the Royal Navy's first carrier to be designed as such from the drawing board.

Eagle was the first carrier to be completed with an island superstructure on the starboard side rather than being flush deck. This feature was a success and has been continued for all subsequent carriers. Eagle also had a flight deck running the full length of the ship.
