Ark Royal Class (1938) CV |
|
HMS Ark
Royal (1938) was completed as a class of one, incorporating many features
learned from lessons from the early carriers of the previous decade. She
was the second aircraft carrier for the RN to be designed as such from the
outset.
She had an armoured flight deck 60ft (18m) above the deep water load line and an island superstructure on the starboard side, and the first carrier to use a flight deck safety barrier. Other aircraft equipment included 2 accelerators, 3 lifts, and hydraulic arrester wires. Although she could carry a full complement of 72 aircraft she never carried this many as this would have reduced her fighting efficiency. She was fully operational by Sept-1939 when WW2 broke out.
