Duke of Edinburgh Class (1906) CC

The two ships of the Duke of Edinburgh Class (1906) were Armoured Cruisers. Part of the 1902 construction programme.

They were intended to be a significant advance on the previous fleet cruisers, the Drake Class (1903). Being better armed and with more extensive belt armour and horizontal armour spread over three decks.

Unfortunately they were shown to have some serious design errors. The secondary 6in guns were too light for effective fleet use and the 3pdrs were inadequate for protection against torpedo boat destroyers. They also repeated the mistake of having their 6in guns in casemates so close to the water they were awash in all but calmest seaway.

In 1917, HMS Duke of Edinburgh had her secondary guns moved to the main deck level.
