The battle was fought off the north coast of San Domingo in the West Indies,
near the French naval base of Cape Francois. Three British ships under Captain Arthur Forest, intended to meet a French convoy but instead encountered a more powerful French squadron under Admiral de Kersaint, comprising 3 ships-of-the-line and 4 smaller vessels. During the battle both sides suffered severe damage. The French retired to their nearby base . The British to Port Royal in Jamaica where it was several weeks before the battle damage could be repaired. By this time the French convoy had left. |
