Description The action took place near the Brest roads.

HMS Mars chased, the French ship-of-the-line Hercule. The action began at 2115hrs with both ships anchored near each other. At 2030hrs Hercule struck her colours.

Hercule suffered 290 casualties from about 680 aboard.

Mars had 30 killed including her captain and 60 wounded out of 634 aboard.
