Zealous was completed as a single ship class.
She was one of the wooden hulled ships which were converted during construction to an ironclad. Only minimum modifications were made to her during the conversion so she emerged as one of the shortest ironclads. She was also unique at the time with mounting only one type of gun instead of having a mixed armament.
