Formidable Class (1901) BB

The Formidable Class of battleships were considered very large and powerful ships in their day.

They were improved Canopus Class (1899), displacing an additional 2,000 tons.

Their main armament was the new 12in Mk IX gun which had a 40 calibre barrel instead of the 35 calibre of earlier marks. It also had the BVIII mounting which allowed loading at all elevation angles and all training angles. This was the final development of the twin12in mounting, later marks only had detailed improvements.

Two were sunk during WW1 and one survived.
