Colossus Class (1886) BB

The two ships of the Colossus Class (1886) followed the design of Inflexible (1881) in having a massively armoured central citadel, and weakly protected bow and stern sections. They were the last ships to follow this short lived layout.

In other respects they were leaders of important developments. Being the first ships constructed of steel and with compound armour. Their guns returned to the Breech Loading type, the first since the 1860's. Which were mounted in two turrets, one of which was mounted on each side of the centreline. With the narrow superstructure forward and aft they could therefore fire ahead and astern, but it was not ideal.
