HMS Montgomery (1940) DD  (1st)

    
This the only ship to carry the name HMS Montgomery was a Town Class, destroyer. One of 50 sold to the Royal Navy under the destroyers for bases agreement.

Originally the USS Wickes DD75, built by Bath Iron Works, laid down 26-Jun-1917, launched 25-Jun-1918, commissioned in the US Navy 31-Jul-1918, commissioned in the Royal Navy 23-Oct-1940 and renamed.

Refitted at Devonport 20-Nov-1940 and joined the 7th Escort Group 12-Jan-1941 for convoy escort duty.

Further refit at Barrow took from Apr to Sep-1941, after which she joined the 4th Escort Group and continued convoy escort work.

Another refit, this time on the Clyde took from 07-Oct-1941 to 25-Nov-1941 then joined the Western local Escort Force at Halifax. Remained there until Late Dec-1943.

Returned to the UK at the end of December-1943 and paid off at the Tyne.

Sold 20-Mar-1945 for breaking up.

Won the Battle Honour: Atlantic 1941-43.
