This the first ship to carry the name HMS Montagu was a
52-gun, ship. Originally HMS Lyme. Built at Portsmouth, launched 1654, 145ft long, 35ft wide and of 764 tons builders measurement (bm). Renamed HMS Montagu 1660 and rated as a third rate, ship-of-the-line, of 836 tons bm. Rebuilt at Chatham 1675, rebuilt at Woolwich 1698 as 905 tons bm. Rebuilt at Portsmouth 1716 as 920 tons bm. Broken up Sep-1749. Won the Battle Honours: Lowestoft 1665, Orfordness 1666, Sole Bay 1672, Barfleur 1692, Passero 1718, Gibraltar 1704 and Velez Malaga 1704.
