HMS Courageous was laid down in May-1915 and completed in Jan 1917 as a light Battlecruiser. See HMS Courageous (1917) BC.

In June-1924 at Devonport she was completely cut down and reconstructed as a flush deck aircraft carrier, with the conversion being completed in May-1928.

She served initially in the Mediterranean until 1930, then refit until 1935. Back to the Mediterranean for a short spell, then to the Home Fleet as Flagship aircraft carrier from 1936-39.

WW2 found her with the Channel Fleet based at Portland.
