This the only ship to carry the name HMS Begum was a
Ruler Class (1942) escort aircraft carrier. Built for the US Navy as
USS Bolinas, CVE 36, and transferred to the Royal Navy under lease-lend
terms. Built by Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding Corp, laid down 03-Aug-1942, launched 11-Nov-1942, transferred to the Royal Navy and commissioned 02-Aug-1943. Modifications to meet Royal Navy requirements followed at Vancouver, and sailed from New York for Liverpool 09-Jan-1944. Sailed to join the Eastern Fleet 03-Mar-1944 and operated in the Indian Ocean until Jan-1945 when she left to return to the UK. Refitted at the Clyde and converted to a ferry carrier Feb-1945 to Apr-1945. Sailed 17-Apr-1945 to join the British Pacific Fleet, and operated there until Oct-1945. Returned to the UK and arrived at the Clyde 10-Nov-1945 to de-store. Returned to the US navy 05-Jan-1946 at Norfolk, Virginia. Sold 16-Apr-1947 as the merchant vessel Raki. Renamed I Yung 1966. Broken for scrap at Taiwan Mar-1974. Won the Battle Honour: East Indies 1944
