Honour - PUERTO BELLO 1739 |
||||
Description |
The action took place at Puerto Bello, Panama.
It was an early action of the War of Jenkins Ear, against the Spanish, which was later subsumed into the larger War of Austrian Succession. A squadron under Vice-Admiral Edward Vernon was sent to the West Indies to conduct operations against the Spanish. In particular to intercept Spanish treasure ships before the annual convoy left Mexico for Spain. It attacked and took the port of Puerto Bello, capturing the treasure which had been accumulated there. After this the port fortifications were destroyed.
