Description |
This was one of a number of actions during the Guadalcanal campaign in the
Pacific. A Japanese force of 10 destroyers, (7 transporting troops and 3 escorts), were engaged by a US Navy force of 3 cruisers and 4 destroyers, which included the cruiser HMS Leander. The action was confused with many torpedoes fired and gun action taking place between rapidly manoeuvring ships. One Japanese destroyer was sunk and the cruiser USS Helena struck by 5 torpedoes was sunk with heavy loss of life. HMS Leander suffered no damage or crew killed.
