Description The action took place off Basseterre, Guadeloupe in the West Indies.

The French ship Oreste was known to be at anchor near the shore and HMS Scorpion was directed to take her. At 2100hrs while heading inshore HMS Scorpion discovered her prey under way at the north end of the bay and gave chase.

Fire was opened at 2230hrs from bow chasers and at 2300hrs the engagement began. from time to time Scorpion also fired on a shore battery which tried to interfere with the fight. This continued until 0130hrs when Oreste struck her colours having suffered severe damage to her rigging.

At this point the barge from HMS Blonde arrived and assisted in taking possession of Oreste and was in danger of grounding on the shore.
