Description The action took place about 10 miles east of Gibralter, off Ceuta, Spain.

HMS Phoebe encountered the French ship Africaine and at 1930hrs closed with her.

By 2130hrs having suffered severe damage and casualties, the French ship surrendered.

In addition to her normal crew, Africaine also carried about 400 soldiers which resulted in her very high casualty rate of 200 killed and 143 wounded out of 715 on board.

Phoebe lost 1 killed and 12 wounded.
